Power of Consistency the Secret Sauce for Success
View Post
Here are my thoughts on the theory of progress. It is designed to be a motivational talk for anyone who needs a boost. The main points touched upon are: progress can take a while, growth is non-linear, and consistency is queen (or king!).

The people who are consistent outperform those who are not. Let’s look at the theory of compounding progress.

Progress is cumulative. It is compounding. Progress begets additional progress on its own.

The point is that for a fixed amount of time (say 1 hour of practice) an experienced person will derive more benefit than an inexperienced person.

The more experienced a person is, the greater the benefit versus an inexperienced person.

The more you practice, the more you give your experience the opportunity to compound.

The increase of progress is NOT LINEAR.  It is EXPONENTIAL.

The more you practice the better you get at practicing and the more value you get from each time you practice. This is why an experienced actor can pick up a script and act it with one or two read-throughs. An inexperienced actor would need weeks to become familiar with the role.

LeBron James’ coach has identified LeBron’s consistency as the number #1 reason he has outperformed his peers and continues to do so long after many of his peers have long since retired.

Interestingly, the reverse is also true. Inconsistency inhibits the compounding benefits of progress. If the progress you made in your previous practice doesn’t fully carry over in your next practice, you’ve effectively regressed. And it’s not to say that inconsistency doesn’t benefit you, but it WILL cause you to progress more slowly than someone who practices consistently and experiences the full effects of compounding experience.

Stick with it. You’ll get there.
